The Names in This Verse (5)

55 śaṅkhacakragadāpadmapāṇiḥ

bearing conch, discus, mace and lotus in his hands

S.B.G 10.3.9

Hands holding conch, discus, mace, and lotus — the four emblems of Viṣṇu appear in the birth form; Vasudeva's hymn meditates on each weapon as a cosmic symbol.

56 padmanibhekṣaṇaḥ

lotus-eyed

S.B.G 10.3.9

'Lotus-eyed' — the large beautiful eyes of the birth form are described as lotus-petals; the image recurs throughout the Daśama Skandha.

57 kirīṭī

crowned with a diadem

S.B.G 10.3.9

Wearing the jewelled crown of divine sovereignty; B.G 11.17 uses the same word for the terrifying crowned viśvarūpa that Arjuna sees on the battlefield.

58 kaustubhoraskaḥ

bearing the Kaustubha gem on his chest

S.B.G 10.3.9

Bearing the Kaustubha gem on his chest — churned from the Milk Ocean (S.B.G 8.8); it appears already adorning the newborn at birth.

59 sphuranmakarakuṇḍalaḥ

with gleaming makara-shaped earrings

S.B.G 10.3.9

Wearing gleaming crocodile-shaped earrings — the makara motif recurs in the Mahābhārata's description of Kṛṣṇa's regalia throughout the war.
