As a butter-thieving strategy, the toddler releases the calves so they will nurse from the cows and distract the gopīs while he raids the butter-pots.

S.B.G 10.9.1

'Great thief of butter' — Kṛṣṇa steals butter from every household in Gokula; the gopīs hold a mock complaint session before Yaśodā; one of the most celebrated stories of bhakti literature.

who shared the stolen food with the other boys

S.B.G 10.9.3

Kṛṣṇa does not eat all the stolen butter alone — he distributes it to his friends and to the monkeys, increasing his joy by sharing the treasure.
